Pastors Conference

April 21-24, 2008

Twin Rocks Friends Camp

“The Role of the Pastor”

The role of a pastor is something we face every minute of every day: what are we supposed to be doing? How do we not let others’ expectations of what we should be doing overwhelm us? How is the role of the pastor changing today?

Two wonderful speakers will help us examine our role:

Irv Brendlinger, professor in the Religion Department at George Fox University, will speak at the beginning of the week. Irv will use Ephesians as a base and draw from his experience and historical knowledge of the church to help us pastor in ways that equip others for ministry.
Bob Hyatt is founding pastor of Evergreen Life, a community church in Portland, Oregon that strives to live out all of the gospel in community while engaging our culture. He’ll share his experience in developing biblical, culturally relevant, and dynamic models for being a pastor in our world today.”

Please bring your own bedding and towels, unless you register for the Pacific Woods Lodge

Schedule

This week is designed to be an opportunity to rest and recharge. We always appreciate the opportunity to worship together and fellowship around the table. In addition to Irv and Bob speaking:

  • Our YM Staff will update us about what is going on around the YM,
  • Dan Banham (City’s Edge) will be giving musical leadership to our worship times.
  • Gregg Lamm (Second Street) will lead our book discussion this year on “The Cost of Discipleship”.
  • There will be blocks of free time to explore the beach, golf, play games, nap etc. You can also plan to end each day with some activities to get to know one another and have fun together.
  • Beth Banham (City’s Edge) will again marvel us with some fun ways to get to know each other including, of course, fabulous prizes.

A letter from the Pastoral Association President, Shawn McConaughey:

Dear Pastors,

In my recent transition to another type of ministry in the Yearly Meeting, (moving from pastor to Associate Superintendent), I have been keenly aware of how different this new position will be than the one I have been in. For the past 20 years I have been wrestling with how to be an effective pastor.

However one of the ways this new job is very similar is that it comes with expectations. Expectations come from all over the place—sometimes it is hard to know who to listen to. For instance I have learned that whatever Terri Bowen says always trumps Colin. (Well maybe not, but just don’t tell her I said that.)

Maybe you experience some of the same struggles with expectations when it comes to the pastoral role. Those expectations, while often well meaning, can be impossible, reactionary, or even selfish. In addition we strive to place scripture as a central guide for those roles of what God expects of leaders in the church. Of course our own hopes and dreams rattle around in there as well.

I hope you will join us for Pastors Conference April 21-24, 2008 at Twin Rocks. Pastoral roles and expectations will be the topic our two speakers will address. I am looking forward to seeing you there.

Shawn McConaughey

Please note: A recent e-mail sent to the pastors egroup asked for input about how pastors conference is planned. Shawn has heard from a few of you, but would value further input. Please take a few moments to read and respond. It will help us move forward when we take a bit of time to discuss and make a decision during the week.
